Every groomer has met the client who thinks a full groom is just a bath. They can't see the two hours, or the dog that wouldn't stand for its back feet.
"I could build that booking system in a weekend" is the same mistake, made about software.
Your booking system is infrastructure
Nobody picks the gate between the salon floor and the front door from a feature list. You want to know it will hold a dog that has decided to leave, every day, for years, and who comes out when the latch goes.
Your bookings, payments and client messages belong on that list, with the gate and the power. When they work, nobody notices them. If they stop on a Saturday morning you might not notice either, because a broken booking page is quiet. Nobody rings to say they couldn't book; they just book somewhere else.
A weekend gets you the demo
Describe a booking page to an AI and you'll have one by lunch. That part is real, and it's the easy part.
The job starts when real clients arrive:
- A client taps Book twice. Is that one groom or two?
- Two clients take the last Saturday slot in the same second.
- A card declines at 4am, 3 days before the groom.
- A client texts STOP and must never hear from any part of the system again.
- From 1 October 2026, a checkout that adds a card surcharge has to change (what the ban means).
- The job that sends reminders stops quietly, and nobody knows until the no-shows start.
None of it shows in a demo, and none of it stays done, because Stripe retires features and the law keeps changing. Build your own and that's all yours, on top of the 6 dogs booked today.
Here's one of those, handled. Petboost checks the card and holds the funds 72 hours before the appointment, so a card that fails is flagged while there's still time to sort it out.
The test for whoever runs it
Put these to any supplier, us included, or to yourself with a laptop and a free weekend. Someone who has done the work can answer each one in a sentence.
Do they know pet businesses? Can it refuse a booking when a vaccination has lapsed, or when the address is outside the suburbs you drive to? Is capacity a person, or a place: a station, a kennel, a play yard or a van?
Do they know what it is to run one? What happens to your money when a card declines? Can you export your clients today without asking anyone? Who answers at 7am on a Saturday? Can you talk to 2 businesses that use it, who aren't in the marketing?
Can they show the engineering? What happens on a double tap? Who finds out when a scheduled job stops? Where do the card numbers live? What did they ship the last time the law changed?
Our answers
We make Petboost, so weigh this accordingly. Petboost is the booking, payments and client messaging system Australian pet businesses run on, and this is what sits behind it.
Pet businesses. Petboost started inside one. Hound Health Bondi, the daycare and hydrotherapy business our co-founder Annika opened in 2018, still takes its bookings on Petboost, and every business type since was designed inside real salons, daycares, kennels and training yards.
Running one. You can export your clients and pets as a CSV whenever you like. Our team in Sydney answers live chat and email, and the free 1800 line is answered day and night by Emily, our AI assistant. Ahead of the surcharge ban, any business on Petboost still passing the card fee on got a warning in its payment settings, with a button to a tool that builds the fee into its prices.
Engineering. The apps, the database and your photos run on Microsoft Azure in Australia East, and the database keeps 3 live copies in 3 separate data centres. The job that sends reminders and takes payments runs every 15 minutes and checks in with a monitor, so if it stalls, the alarm goes off on our side. A second tap on Book is ignored, and card numbers stay with Stripe, never on our servers. A career designer and a career engineer build Petboost full time, backed by the founder of TechnologyOne, Australia's largest enterprise software company.
It holds at both ends. Meg runs Hounds with Hair:
"Within just 2 days, all of my client information had been transferred, services created, staff added, and my calendar was up and running."
Melissa moved McKinnons across:
"Moving our entire business - 15 staff, 2 salons, 5 trailers, plus grooming, daycare, boarding, and behavioural training - was no small task."
And Craig bought The Grooming Salon in Brisbane this year, after 35 years running other businesses:
"I've used a lot of software over 35 years. This is the best in its field in Australia."
When building your own makes sense
Often, as long as nobody else finds out when it breaks. A calculator for what a groom really costs, a script that tidies your roster for the accountant, a one-off that finds the clients who haven't been in since March, or something that renames 400 photos properly. If it touches a client or moves money, it isn't a weekend project any more.
MoeGo, Gingr and Time To Pet are real products with real teams, so put the same questions to them. The pet-shaped part has its own write-up, and the buyer's guide goes through the product criterion by criterion.
